A deep dive into trauma

Dr Jarrod White

Before completing my studies to become a psychologist i completed my doctoral dissertation on the relationship between culture and trauma - in other words, how can our culture influence the way we understand mental health, the mind, and specifically what trauma is and how it effects us.

In particular, i looked at comparing Holocaust Survivors with Sudanese Refugees. Though the lessons from both of these groups i think also relate to our experience of trauma more broadly.

e.g.

  • The memory remains, it can shift and change, though it doesn't disappear

  • We have to account for time in our capacity to process trauma, it doesn't all happen straight away

  • Making meaning of what happened, happens over time and through processing

  • Our culture and our traditions are useful groundings for rituals that help us remember in a powerful way

These are just some dot points.
