A deep dive into trauma

Dr Jarrod White

Before completing my studies to become a psychologist i completed my doctoral dissertation on the relationship between culture and trauma - in other words, how can our culture influence the way we understand mental health, the mind, and specifically what trauma is and how it effects us.
In particular, i looked at comparing Holocaust Survivors with Sudanese Refugees. Though the lessons from both of these groups i think also relate to our experience of trauma more broadly.
e.g.
The memory remains, it can shift and change, though it doesn't disappear
We have to account for time in our capacity to process trauma, it doesn't all happen straight away
Making meaning of what happened, happens over time and through processing
Our culture and our traditions are useful groundings for rituals that help us remember in a powerful way
These are just some dot points.
